Arlene Mavis Henry

April 1, 1935 — April 14, 2013

Born April 1, 1935, in Oakland, California, the second of twins, Arlene Mavis Henry died April 14, 2013, in her DeSoto home, surrounded by her family. She is preceded in death by her son-in-law, James (Jimmy) Bowen and her mother Helen Yarnel. She is survived by her sisters Billy Chase of Apple Valley, California, and Dee Upham of Lake Havasu, Arizona; her brother Arlen Shirley of Costa Mesa, California; her three children, Deborah (Deb) Bowen of Duncanville, Janice (Jan) Ramos of Midlothian, and Rodney (Rod) Henry of DeSoto; her daughter-in-law, Marylynne Henry; and 5 grandchildren, Diane Henry, Kevin Bowen, Kristina Ramos, Matthew Ramos and Ryan Henry. Arlene, known as Gan Gan by her grandchildren, was a loving mother and a wonderful grandmother. Born in California, she came to Texas in the 1950’s. She has been a resident of DeSoto for over 50 years. She was a real estate agent, member of the PTA and homemaker, but her real passion was her children and grandchildren. She spent countless hours at sports games, drill team performances and, most importantly, working on her arts and crafts. She was an accomplished seamstress, and would often be found making quilts. When she wasn’t shopping, she would spend hours planting, watering and even talking to all of the plants that she had grown. Arlene was an amazing gardener. Arlene believed that relationships were the most important thing in her life and everyone who met her would immediately be drawn to her strong spirit and wonderful sense of humor. She was a member of the Red Hats and through them made many lasting relationships. She married her love of people and her talent as a seamstress most recently with her involvement with the “Prayers and Squares” commission at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church in DeSoto, where she helped making quilts for people that are ill. She was an indomitable person and an inspiration to all who knew her. She will be greatly missed.
