Calvin’s Travels
Born November 10, 1928 in Dallas, Texas to Jim and Jewel Bucher, Calvin was the first of their four children followed by Lois, Glenn and Billy. As a young boy he excelled in school and loved accompanying his father, a carpenter, to work during the summer. While playing in the yard one Sunday morning, he was invited to attend worship services at the local Free Methodist Church. This chance encounter opened a new path for Calvin as in time he became convinced of God’s love for him and became a Christian believer. Through this connection, he transferred to Central Academy in McPherson, Kansas to finish high school. A bubbly young woman caught his eye and he married Laurel Jean Bohall in 1947 and began a 68-year adventure taking them to Illinois, Texas, Washington, California, back to Washington for sixteen years where they completed their family, and eventually to Texas in 1965. Trained as a chemist, Calvin worked in agriculture for several years before entering the paper industry where he spent the remainder of his long career. He retired at age 75 after owning and operating a print shop in DeSoto.
Calvin was a consummate believer in the liberal arts. Who can picture him without a book with pen and paper in hand, a camera nearby and music on the stereo? He encouraged his children in the arts and learning, not just for the sake of a degree, but to be lifelong learners and musicians. He took his Christian faith seriously, endeavoring to understand all that he could of the scriptures and committing everything that he could not understand to faith in the risen Christ.
A serious man, yet he delighted in aesthetics of music, photography, painting, architecture, nature and food. Calvin loved to cook for special occasions and eat anything that was new and unusual.
His final leg of the journey was completed on Wednesday morning, April 27, 2016, when Calvin died at Bethesda Gardens in Arlington, TX surrounded by family.
A special thank you to the staff at Arlington Bethesda Gardens, the All Star Hospice team, and friends who visited Calvin and Laurel since they moved away from DeSoto in 2012.
A celebration of Calvin’s life will be held at Dallas First Church of the Nazarene, 825 North Cockrell Hill Road, DeSoto, TX 75115 on Saturday, May 7 at 3:00 pm. Memorial donations may be sent to the Calvin and Laurel Bucher fund at Central Christian College, PO Box 1403, McPherson, Kansas 67460.
