David Dennis Mitchell passed away October 8, 2015 at Stoneybrook Memory Care in Garland, Texas. He was born February 11, 1933 in Memorial Hospital in Houston, Texas to George D. Mitchell Jr. and Esther Cox Mitchell. Attending Houston public schools, he graduated from John Reagan High School where he lettered in football. He graduated from Texas A&M with a degree in Geology in 1955. After college he served in the United States Army for two years and was honorably discharged as 1st Lieutenant. He continued in the Army Reserve until 1964, when he was honorably discharged as a 1st Leutienet. As a teenager he worked for his father on a seismology exploration crew and later for Humble Oil. He retired as an exploration geophysicist after 26 years with Mobil Oil Corporation. He lived in various cities and towns in Texas; in Chico, California; in New Orleans; and for a total of six years in England and Norway. His travels took him to Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Russia, Asia, the South Pacific, Australia, and lastly on cruise to Alaska. He is survived by his wife of San Saba, Joyce Jones Mitchell, her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sons David Mitchell Jr. of Dallas, and Paul Jon Mitchell of Atlanta, Georgia, from his marriage of 45 years to Hazel Woods Mitchell, deceased; son Dennis Charles Mitchell, wife Michelle and their son Zackary , from his marriage to Betty Lou Klinefelter Mitchell, deceased; his brother George Mitchell III, wife Genia, and their children Danny Mitchell, Amy Mitchell, Andrea Wallace (husband Mark), and Dr.Kathleen Davis (husband Johnny) and five grandchildren; and a wealth of other relations. David Mitchell was a sincerely good man and will be much missed. He and Hazel volunteered as members of PLAN of North Texas and of NAMI Dallas, which he served two years as president, advocating to improve the lives of those affected by mental illness. He regularly enjoyed playing golf.
The family will receive friends from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 17, 2015 at Northway Christian Church, 7202 W. Northwest Hwy., Dallas, TX 75225 (214.361.6641) with Services honoring his life beginning at 3:30 P.M. at the Church.
Interment will follow at 2 P. M. on Sunday, October 18, 2015 at Wallace Creek Cemetery San Saba, Texas.
