The family will receive friends at West/Hurtt Funeral Home on Tuesday - July 07, 2026 from 10:00 - 11:00 A.M. with a Graveside Service to follow at 11:30 A.M. in the Waxahachie City Cemetery, Waxahachie, TX with Deacon Chris Paulsen, officiating.
Deirdre Shaw Garner, known as Dede to her friends and family, was called home to the Lord on June 27. After a brave fight with cancer for the last 12 months, Dede passed away peacefully at home in Duncanville, TX June 27 surrounded by family.
Born Christmas Eve 1959 in Nacogdoches, TX, Dede was one of the last of the old breed, part of the last graduating class from “the old high school”. She had depth of knowledge and impeccable taste in western clothing while working for her father's department store.
True to her Scottish heritage, she was frugal to a fault and had a strict exterior shell, able to roll through whatever life threw at her with a steady, even keel. Behind her tough exterior was a kind, compassionate, and loyal girl.
Dede attended Holy Spirit Catholic Church, and not only supported members of that community, but also St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church. She made sure all members of her community were loved, from helping other parents with carpooling from school, to volunteering to bring snacks and meals in times of need.
Taking care of her garden was something she took great pride in. Her Scottish ancestors descended from the area of “Cadderlie”, translated roughly to “Deirdre’s Garden”. The love and work she put into her garden was not only second nature, but part of her heritage. It was not uncommon to receive a plant or gardening tool as a gift too.
She always had a soft spot for animals, adopting or rehoming many cats and dogs. Never short on nickname for animals in the neighborhood, campgrounds, or frogs, lizards, butterflies, dragonflies and even possums in her beautiful yard. Dede is preceded by father Noble, mother Yvonne “Nonnie”, and brother Gary. She is survived by her husband Chuck of 37 years, son Nick Garner, daughter Kathy Garner with fiancé Kris Baker and sister Sarah Shaw.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to Animal Hope (https://animalhope.org/) or a local pet shelter / adoption center of your choice.
