Edd Lee Haskins

Edd Lee Haskins, “Grandad”, was born on April 15, 1921, and passed away on Saturday, August 20, 2011. He attended Sunset High School, North Texas Agriculture College, and University of Texas. He received his Private Pilot license at the age of 18. While at the University of Texas, he was the Captain of their Fencing Team. He married his high school sweetheart, Sarah, and they were married for 52 years until her death in 1996. Edd worked for a Reserve Army Commission while in college, and was a member of the Reserve 4th Army Rifle Team and competed in National Army Matches. He served in the Army in WWII as a Captain and Company Commander of the “A” Company 140th Infantry. He saw service in the Philippines after which his units were staged for the invasion of Japan until the atomic bomb was deployed. Edd was employed for 30 years with the Treasury Department, Internal Revenue Service where he was a group Supervisor in the Intelligence Division. He attended Cliff Temple Baptist Church for over 90 years. He was first enrolled by a certificate from Dr. Wallace Bassett on April 19, 1921 in Central Baptist Church before it was renamed “Cliff Temple”. Edd was ordained as a deacon in 1968 and was active in many church committees. After retirement, he raised Santa Gertrudis cattle on his farm near Lake Whitney. Later he raised Asian and African deer and antelope which his friends and family enjoyed watching and feeding. One of his favorite joys was to fill his feeding bucket, tap the side, and watch all the animals come in to feed. Another hobby was making gemstone jewelry and mineral collecting. He was a member of the Oak Cliff Gem and Mineral Society. He is survived by three children and their spouses, 11 grandchildren, Jeff and Heather Dunn, Ron Haskins, Scott Haskins, Chip and Suzanne Haynes, Brad Haskins, Patrick Dunn and Victoria Espinosa, Ashley Kuhn and John Richard Kuhn, 6 great grandchildren, Madalyn, Emma and Hannah Haskins, Lexie and Lauren Dunn and Grace Haskins. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday (8/22) at the funeral home. Services will be held at 2 P. M. Tuesday, August 23, 2011 in Bassett Chapel of Cliff Temple Baptist Church, 125 Sunset Ave., Dallas, TX 75208 with Dr. Dan Griffin, officiating. Interment with Military Honors will follow at Laurel Land in Dallas. Granddad would ask that any donations be made to Cliff Temple Baptist Church or the Charity of your choice.
