Elizabeth (Merrifield) Scruggs, 101, of DeSoto, TX, passed away on September 1, 2021. Mrs. Scruggs was born March 3, 1920, in Ovilla, Texas and lived in the Dallas area all of her life. Elizabeth was a resident of DeSoto since 1943. She graduated from Duncanville High School, where she played basketball and was recognized by her basketball team with a MVP award. As a child, Elizabeth and her siblings walked or traveled on the back of an old gray mare to school in Ovilla. They attended the Baptist Church in Ovilla as a family. She married Harold Scruggs on November 9, 1940. Their son, Troy was born in 1942. Elizabeth and Harold were members of the Church of Christ in DeSoto and she was baptized in Ten Mile Creek in the early 1940’s. While Troy was in school, she was a member of the DeSoto Parent Teacher Association (PTA). In the late 1950s she started working for Dallas County in the Title Department, from which she retired in 1985. Elizabeth learned to play dominos as a child and enjoyed playing with family and friends. She was recognized by her friends as a champion dominos player up until her death. She was well known for her beautiful prize-winning quilts and delicious cakes and pies. Elizabeth was an independent person, living in her home and driving just days before passing. She was an active member of Creekside Church in Midlothian, TX where she had many loved friends and attended regularly. Elizabeth lived a long life full of many joys. Her family and friends love her and will miss her dearly. She is survived by her son Troy Scruggs (Ethel) of DeSoto. Mrs. Scruggs has two grandsons: David (Elizabeth) of Garland, TX and Philip (Shelly) of Moscow, ID; and six great grandchildren: Trenton (Rowlett, TX), Connor (Garland, TX), Ethan, Spenser, Aspen and Bryant (Moscow, ID). Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Scruggs (marriage of 56 years), parents George and Georgia Merrifield, and her siblings Elsa, Bill, George, Bob, and Kenneth. The family will receive friends on Tuesday - September 07, 2021 from 9:00 A.M. until 10:00 A.M. at Creekside Church of Christ, 5401 E. US Hwy. 287, Midlothian, TX 76065 with the Funeral Service beginning at 10:00 A.M. (same day) with Mr. Clint Rhodes, minister. Interment will follow in Wheatland Cemetery, Dallas, TX.
