She was born to Nanny and Marion Riddle May 21, 1917 in Banty, Okalahoma. Ethel graduated with her degree from Texas Women’s University in 1954. She was married for 67 years to the late Fred Nickles, former superintendent of DeSoto ISD. They resided in Oklahoma before they relocated to Texas in 1952.
Ethel was passionate about education. She herself was a teacher for 35 years. She taught all subjects to fifth graders and sixth grade math. She dedicated herself to her pupils and their learning. Her students still remember her fondly for her effective and loving teaching methods that left lasting impressions on their lives.
After retiring from teaching she was an accomplished seamstress. Many of you knew her as teacher, some as their seamstress, some as a baker that delivered pecan pies to your doorstep each week. We called her Mother, Granny, Great Granny and many called her friend. She was truly the most kind, selfless, generous, gentle soul.
Ethel is survived by her three children: Freida Richey of Enterprise, AL, Phillip Nickles of DeSoto, TX and Judy Carhart of Krum, TX. She is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A visitation will be held at West / Hurtt Funeral Home, Monday, June 3 from 6 - 8 p.m. The funeral will be held at First United Methodist Church in DeSoto, 310 Roaring Springs, Tuesday June 4 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Laurel Land Memorial Park in Dallas.
