Evelyn Charlene Hinkle

September 18, 1939 — January 8, 2025

With heavy hearts, we share that Evelyn Charlene (Swan) Hinkle of DeSoto, Texas, 85, passed away peacefully on January 8, 2025, surrounded by her three devoted daughters, sons-in-law, and grandchildren. Evelyn was born in Zanesville, Ohio, on September 18, 1939. She attended Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio, graduating with a degree in the Classics. She moved to Texas where she raised her three daughters and was a dedicated educator for thirty-nine years at Bishop Dunne Catholic School. Evelyn taught Latin and English with a passion that left a lasting impact on students and colleagues. Many approached Evelyn in public, saying, “You might not remember me, but you changed my life.” She was admired for her kindness, compassion, wit, and wisdom, mentoring countless individuals. Affectionately known as “Mom” to many, she served as Bishop Dunne’s Vice Principal for more than two decades. Evelyn will be remembered for her dry wit, intellectual curiosity, incredible work ethic, familial devotion, and deep and abiding faith. She loved her daughters, grandchildren, crossword and jigsaw puzzles, the Dallas Mavericks, Braum’s banana splits, crime television shows, Doublemint gum, gameshows, Mrs. Baird’s cinnamon rolls, glazed donuts, and black coffee. She disliked poor grammar, lilies, or tags sticking out of one’s clothes. She was a one-of-a-kind woman with a twinkle in her eye, a smile on her face, a love for life that was contagious, and an unbreakable spirit. Evelyn is survived by her daughters Michelle (John) Zaugg of Coppell, Texas, Noelle Rea of DeSoto, Texas, and Erica Hinkle (Jim) MacDonald of Mendota Heights, Minnesota; eight grandchildren Kristin, Wesley, and Nicholas Rea; A.J., Lexi, and Tori Zaugg; and Kenny and Mitchell MacDonald; and two great-grandchildren Zion Rea and Murdoch Jones. Evelyn’s family and friends will honor her at a viewing at West-Hurtt Funeral Home, DeSoto, Texas, on Sunday, January 19, 2025, from 4:00-6:00 p.m. She will be laid to rest at Holy Redeemer Mausoleum following a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, January 20, 2025, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Duncanville, Texas, with her former student Father Michael Guadagnoli officiating. A rosary will be said at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Spirit before the funeral mass. For those who cannot attend in person, her funeral mass will be livestreamed at Funeral Mass for Evelyn Hinkle 1-20-25 10:00AM at www.youtube.com
