94, of DeSoto, TX passed away June 14, 2023. Today, we gather here to celebrate the remarkable life of Gwendolyn Caylor a woman whose presence illuminated the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her. Gwen's journey began on August 6, 1928, in Houston, MS, as the daughter of Virginia Estell Harrington and Andrew Densmore Harrington. Gwen's love affair with music began early in life. She pursued her passion, studying at Blue Mountain College and Delta State University graduating in 1950 with a Bachelor of Music Education. Her melodious voice echoed through countless halls and sanctuaries, enchanting all who heard it. Gwen's commitment to her craft extended beyond personal success, as she dedicated herself to teaching and nurturing young minds. Beginning her teaching career in Amory Mississippi in 1950 she taught for over 45 years, guiding students through the world of music and primary school education, imparting knowledge, inspiration, and a deep appreciation for the art form. She retired from Amber Terrace Intermediate of DeSoto ISD at the conclusion of her career. Her journey was intertwined with that of her beloved husband, John Richard Caylor. Together, they embarked on a life of shared purpose and unwavering devotion with their marriage on June 2, 1951. Gwen often shared the story of how she chose John, knowing that he was the man she could wear her highest heels for and still reach up on her tiptoes to kiss. Their union was an embodiment of love and mutual respect, and together, they planted the seeds of faith and community in Omaha, NE, where two mission churches, Harrison St. Baptist and Raven Oaks Baptist, were born. John preceded her in death in 2004. Gwen's life was a testament to her deep faith and commitment to service. She poured her heart into the church, leading Women's Bible studies, directing ensembles, and singing solos that lifted spirits and touched souls, including singing at Billy Graham crusades in Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, and Texas, including duets with George Beverly Shea. Gwen's faith was not confined to the church walls; she extended her love and compassion to nursing homes, young adults, and vacation Bible school programs, sharing her gifts and uplifting those around her. Gwen and John were active members of Hillcrest Baptist for 17 years, First Baptist Oak Cliff for 10 years, and Hampton Road Baptist Church from 1998 till her passing. It was through their active memberships in these congregations that developed friendships and bonds that have lasted for years. Gwen leaves behind a profound legacy of love and family.
