Horatio Hill, Jr. was truly one of the greatest among us. He was an extraordinary florist whose flawless artistry delivered light to even the darkest of occasions. More profoundly, he was a staunch activist for equality, an advocate for justice, and a barrier breaker who unassumingly inspired everyone lucky enough to have known him.
Horatio was the most gracious of hosts. His home was an oasis to generations, his patio was a respite from the worries beyond its walls. Whether it was an intimate gathering or a grand party, Horatio took great care to provide comfort and acceptance. In doing so, he unknowingly taught many of us how to entertain with sophistication and elegance.
Horatio is survived by his technicolor cast of characters. We were brought together by his sheer magnetism, drawn into his orbit from every corner of the globe, representing every race, creed, color and orientation. And now it is our duty to ensure his legacy of love continues to circle our beautiful blue marble.
He has not left us without a way forward. He has skillfully hidden remembrances in our subconscious. Each time we hear Diana Ross sing, we will remember the endless love he effortlessly gave us all. Every time we smell a stargazer lily, bite into a pork rib, or twist the knob on a box of chardonnay, we will remember Horatio’s passion for life and his wonderfully infectious laughter.
Horatio turned all our worlds upside down the moment we met him. He changed the way we perceive the world around us, taught us to reject stereotypes, and showed us how to embrace diversity. The echoes of the life he lived will be felt for generations. We love you Horsie, rest in peace.
Horatio was preceded in death by his beloved mother: Luree Hill.
He is survived by his siblings: LaFaye Mabry, Aultry P. Bromsey, Billie Turner, Johnny Bromsey, Rita Davis, Shariyun Holmes and a host of nephews, nieces, great nephews & nieces.
