Jack Marvin Thomas

Jack Marvin Thomas passed away in the comfort of his home on April 08, 2018. He was born and raised in Dallas (Oak Cliff) and was a graduate of Sunset High School. Jack served our country as a Corporal in the US Marine Corps., where he was stationed on the aircraft carrier USS Lake Champlain (CV-39) 1944 for its first trip (shake down) until the war was over. Jack used his G.I. Bill to acquire his pilots' license after his service in the Marine Corps.
He continued to serve his community with a career in law enforcement. He began with the Grand Prairie Police Department and retired from Dallas County after 32 years of service. He was a Master Mason with membership of 42 years at the James Ladd Burgess #1305 lodge.
Jack enjoyed his retirement years at his farm in Frost, baling hay and feeding his cattle but most importantly, he enjoyed spending time with his family.
Mr. Thomas was preceded in death by his parents: Hulda & Walwin Thomas;
sons: Fred, Tommy and Jack, Jr.;
wife: Marge Van Natten Thomas
and brother: Walwin Thomas, Jr.
He is survived by his sister: Nancy Jane Thomas;
son: Richard Thomas;
daughter: Susie Thomas;
grandchildren: Kevin Scott Thomas & Michael Thomas;
great grandchildren: Karlie, Keri, Jack & Braydon
and faithful dog: Maxine.
Jack suffered a debilitating stroke on his 90th birthday in 2016. That day he was doing what he loved, baling hay. He is admired for his tremendous strength during this time. He remained sharp of mind, kind and thoughtful through many setbacks and he never gave up.
Special thanks to Crystal Mayfield, Tammy Zanter and Sue Hill who encouraged him to overcome each block in the path.
The family will receive friends in the Chapel of West/Hurtt Funeral Home on Tuesday - April 17, 2018 from 11:30 A.M. until 12:30 P.M. at which time the Funeral Service will begin (all on the same day).
Interment will follow in the Dallas/Ft. Worth National Cemetery, Dallas, TX.
Those serving as pallbearers will be Dick Davis, Billy Watson, Brad Justiss, Kenny Meazell, Evan Adams and Miguel Nava. Honorary pallbearer will be Ray Stewart.
