James Brian Hitchborn, Jim, passed away Wednesday, August 12, 2015 in Dallas, Texas. He was born in 1938 in Grand Junction, CO where he lived until going to the U.S. Naval Academy in 1958. He was a member of the 1960 Olympic eight oar rowing team competing in Rome, Italy. He went on to serve 26 years in the U.S. Navy serving in Viet Nam and having two ship commands and two major shore commands. He retired from the Navy in 1988 and settled in Desoto, Texas. He retired from the corporate world in 2001 and became very active with Golden Retriever Rescue and animal rescue in general. He finally took up golf, a lifelong ambition, in retirement. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Jan; sons Jim Hitchborn and David Onyon; daughter Kimberly Darnell; son in law: Dr. Michael Darnell; step-daughter Jennifer Onyon; daughter-in-laws Audra Hitchborn and Jana Onyon; and seven grandchildren – Lindsay Darnell, Chelsea Darnell, Ryan Darnell, Madison Hitchborn, Sofia Hitchborn, Katelyn Onyon and Haylee Onyon. He is also survived by his sister Sally McCulley and nephew John McCulley, both of Grand Junction as well as his beloved dogs and two cats. He will be buried at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, August 20, 2015 at D/FW National Cemetery in Dallas, Texas with full military honors. In lieu of flowers to the family, it is requested a donation be made to the Tri City Animal Shelter which he and his wife have supported over the years.
