It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Juan Jose Cantu Jr. (age 78). Mr. Cantu, or John as most people knew him, passed away at his home in Balch Springs, Texas. He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 57 years Lydia Trevino Cantu. John is also survived by his daughter, Katherine Cantu, his son, Juan Jose Cantu III and his daughter-in-law Alys Cantu, his daughter Deborah Smith and son-in-law Carey Smith, and his daughter Carol Canava and daughter-in-law Maricela Canava. He leaves behind ten grandchildren, six brothers, one sister, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents, Juan Jose Cantu Sr., Michela Duran Cantu, and brother Miguel (Mike) Cantu. He was a general contractor since 1968 specializing in concrete structures and underground utilities throughout the state of Texas. John was a kind and sincere man who never declined an opportunity to extend a helping hand to others. He had a love of music and enjoyed singing and playing his guitar. His many interests also included genealogy, sustainable energy, food, and gardening. In his life, his generous nature touched many people and his passing will leave an indelible mark on all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, we ask donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
