Marcia Ann Miller Pitt

November 21, 1939 — May 4, 2018

Marcia Ann Miller Pitt died May 4, 2018 at her home in Murphy, Texas.  Marcia was the great-great niece of Dallas founder John Neely Bryan.   A 5th generation Dallasite, Marcia graduated in the first ever senior class of South Oak Cliff high school in 1958 where she was actively involved in drama, choir and the drill team.  She attended East Texas State College and was instrumental in chartering a chapter of the Kappa Delta sorority in which she served as the first chapter president.  In addition, she was a lieutenant of the ROTC Angel Flight program.  She received her BS in drama with a minor in music in 1961.  After college, Marcia married her childhood sweetheart, Michael Pitt and taught speech and drama in the Dallas ISD while he finished his undergraduate degree at SMU.  When her husband was accepted into graduate school at UT, she landed a job in the Austin ISD at its first integrated campus.  While there, her students earned top honors at state level one act play competitions, won speech and debate tournaments and performed in many plays and musicals under her direction.  One of her former students, Ron Kirk, went on to serve as Texas Attorney General, Mayor of Dallas, and U.S. Trade Representative—no doubt he learned great speech making and debate techniques from Mrs. Pitt.  Before leaving teaching, she was recognized as “Educator of the Year” by Austin ISD.  She left teaching in 1968 and moved to her home in north Dallas to raise a family.  In the 1970’s and 1980’s Marcia ran her own photofinishing and Professional photography business, Color Unlimited.  During this time she was actively involved in the PTA, the Plano Civic Art Society and in her various bridge groups.  After the death of her husband in 1993, Marcia discovered a talent for watercolor painting.  She was a prolific artist and sold her works throughout Texas and the southwest.  She had several galley showings of her paintings through the years.   She was also an active member of the “Under the Covers” book club, the South Oak Cliff red hat society and served as board member and president of the historic Wheatland Cemetery Association.   Marcia is preceded in death by her Husband, James Michael Pitt; son, Christopher Miller Pitt; and her still-born daughter, Katherine Pitt.  Survived by daughter, Susy Pitt Gulley and husband Chris of Murphy, Texas; grandson Cameron Michael Foley of Murphy, Texas; and brother Mark Miller of  Maypearl, Texas.  Memorials may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  Graveside Services and Interment will be held on Tuesday - May 08, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. in Wheatland Cemetery, 8000 S. Hampton Rd., Dallas, TX 75232.
