Mary Lois (Fillingim) Newman, 70, of Waxahachie, peacefully passed away on July 21, 2024. Born on September 21, 1953, in Fredericksburg, she was the beloved daughter of Willis and LaVerna Fillingim. Mary was raised on a ranch in the Texas panhandle. She studied nursing at Clarendon College, and enjoyed a career providing care to others for over 25 years at Charlton Methodist Hospital in Dallas County. A born-again Christian, Mary was a life-long member of the Baptist community and served Jesus Christ our Lord faithfully. She found comfort and peace in the church, and spent three decades as a devoted congregant of Rolling Hills Baptist Church, and other local ministries. Mary also enjoyed spending time with friends and family, tending to her many animals, volunteering at local nursing homes, and making her house a home to all who entered. She was often lovingly called ‘Mama Mary’ by those whose hearts she touched. Mary is survived by her children: Clinton Newman and wife Laura, and Katelen Newman. She also leaves behind her grandson, Bentley, and her partner-in-crime, Jackie Martin. Mary was preceded in death by her former husband, Henry, their son, Aaron Lane Newman, and her parents, Willis and LaVerna. Mary’s service will be Friday, July 26 at 2:00 at West/Hurtt Funeral Home in DeSoto. Visitation begins at 1:00. She will be laid to rest the following morning at Gageby Cemetery in Hemphill County, Texas at 10:00. Rest in peace, Mary; your loving presence brought joy to all who had the privilege of knowing you. You will be deeply missed and live in our hearts and memories forever.
