Maureen McGahan Ellis of Red Oak, Texas was born at home on July 16, 1931 in Kemp, Texas to Joseph E. McGahan and Ruby Carter McGahan. She passed away on January 31, 2022. Maureen was a faithful servant of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and a member of Grace Place Church where she worshipped with her husband Howard until they were both unable to attend. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and aunt. She was preceded in death by her father, Joseph Barton McGahan, mother, Ruby Carter McGahan, first husband Marvin Darrell Young, brothers Doyle Wadron McGahan, Guy Duane McGahan and John Morace McGahan, sisters Sue McGahan Duncan, Laura McGahan Raney, husband, Clarence Howard Ellis, son, Stephen Marcus Ellis and grandson, Bradley Jefferson Ellis. She is survived by brother, James Horace McGahan, daughter-in-law, Becky McWhorter Ellis, children, Teresa and husband Steve Rowan, Sam and wife Cheryl Ellis, Jeff and wife Cynthia Ellis, eight grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. To Maureen, her family was the most important thing. In 1962 she married Howard Ellis, and in doing so became the full-time mother to three sons and one daughter between 8 and 11 years of age. She loved unselfishly, giving all of her talents and resources to encourage and support Howard and their family. The scripture reference she wrote on the first page of her Bible is I Timothy 5:8 which reads, “Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially their own household, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.” She opened their home on many occasions to those who needed a place to stay, whether short-term or long-term. She shared countless hours with her brothers and sisters caring for her aging parents. She cared tirelessly for Howard when his health required full-time skilled nursing, visiting him daily as her health allowed. She was a wonderful cook, frequently hosting family, church community, neighbors and friends. She enjoyed sewing and crocheting, gardening, her book club and Bunko group. When her children left home she took ceramics and painting classes, sharing the gifts of those talents with family and friends. Those who knew Maureen consistently described her as “such a sweet lady.” In 1 Peter 3:3-4, the apostle Peter says “your beauty should not come from outward adornment…rather it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit.” Maureen had that beauty of spirit. She was a model of faith, grace, mercy, kindness, thankfulness and unselfishness to all who knew and loved her.
