Michelle Lee Dunkins

September 13, 1973 — October 2, 2018

Michelle Melancon-Dunkins was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, teacher, coach and colleague. Her 16-year career as an English teacher, including coaching roles for Soccer, Basketball and Bowling, at Bishop Lynch High School in Dallas, Texas brought her joy working with students and supporting them through life’s ups and downs. She was especially grateful to have her brother, Mark Melancon, as a fellow teacher at Bishop Lynch High School. They coached together and ate lunch together on a daily basis. Michelle also spent the last five years as a part-time college English adjunct professor at El Centro College in Dallas. Her dedication has been repeatedly confirmed in the words of many students who have said “she was my favorite teacher” or “she made a difference in my life.” Despite her busy schedule, Michelle always made time to provide recommendations for her students, and she especially enjoyed when they returned to visit her in the classroom. She impacted the lives of her students, and they in turn impacted her life in many significant ways.

Michelle was a former student at Bishop Lynch High School, and a graduate of the University of North Texas where she completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting and a Master’s Degree in English Literature. She was an avid reader and enjoyed fiction on a variety of topics. She also wrote a novel that she hoped to publish one day. Michelle had a quick wit and was known for comebacks and sarcasm that left her students, colleagues, friends and family laughing or taking a moment to think about what she just said.

Michelle was married to the love of her life, Patrick Dunkins. Close family members include her mother Wanda Melancon; father Joseph Melancon (wife Belle Heneberger and sons Joshua Melancon and Jacob Melancon); sisters Jill Melancon and Janet Melancon (husband Rick Cathey); and brother Mark Melancon (wife Lyz Melancon and their daughters Lexi Melancon and Kamryn Melancon). Patrick’s family includes his father Willie Dunkins, sisters Kimberly Dunkins and DeAnn Dunkins-Lax (husband Romond Lax), and his children Marcus Dunkins and Shelby Dunkins. She also had a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and other family members who loved her dearly.
