Norma S. Martin

June 3, 1938 — January 14, 2022

Norma Sue Martin was born Norma Sue Day on June 3, 1938, in Maypearl, Texas, to Darris and Lola Allivee Day. She was their only child and grew up on a farm in Buena Vista, Texas, surrounded by animals. She graduated from Waxahachie High School in 1956 and married her high school sweetheart, Melvin Martin, in June 1956. Norma and Melvin had one child, Suzette, in 1962. Norma was devoted to her family and her career. After a brief stint working for an insurance company, in 1968 she became a realtor, and selling real estate became a much beloved passion. She was widely recognized in the industry and was described in one newspaper as a “DeSoto real estate legend.” She cared deeply about her clients and the industry as a whole, becoming a mentor to many younger agents and others working in the business. Always dressed to impress, she was beautiful, as well as a fun, warm and generous presence to everyone with whom she worked. Norma was a longstanding member of the Church of Christ, was deeply devoted to her faith and could be seen in church every Sunday she was able to attend. She became a grandmother in 1986 and again in 1991. In January 2006, a stroke ended her career, and she faced the ensuing difficulties with awe-inspiring personal strength and grace. She remained married to her husband Melvin for 62 years until his passing. She was deeply beloved by her family, and she passed away quickly and peacefully at the Lord’s calling on January 14, 2022. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. Norma is survived by her daughter Suzette Bartosh; son-in-law Tom Bartosh; granddaughter Brooke Kennel and her husband Matt; granddaughter Audrey Bartosh; great-grandson Harold Kennel; brother-in-law James Martin and his wife Sue; sister-in-law Nancy Hardin and her husband Jim; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. She will be greatly missed. The family will receive friends in the Chapel of West/Hurtt Funeral Home on Friday - January 21, 2022 from 10:00 - 11:00 A.M. with the Funeral Service beginning at 11:00 A.M. with Mr. Jim Barnett, officiating. Interment will follow in Waxahachie City Cemetery, Waxahachie, TX.
