Susan Mary Marr

October 26, 1955 — January 7, 2012

Susan Mary Marr was born the youngest of four children, born to Harry and Thelma Sanders in Fayettville, Arkansas, October 1955. From Arkansas, she and her family moved to Naha Air Force base in Okinawa, Japan. They then moved to Maxwell Air Force base in Montgomery, Alabama until 1964 when the family moved again to Hampton, Virginia, finally ending up in Dallas, Texas in 1967. There she attended Mark Twain Elementary, St. Elizabeth Catholic School, and Bishop Dunne High School where she was a cheerleader and active in numerous school activities including theater and drill team. After graduation, Susy attended community college for a short while also pursuing a hostess position with Continental Bus Line. While her next position may not have fulfilled her love of travel, it did change her life forever. A friend she worked with in the office offered to set her up with a friend of hers, Susy’s future husband David Marr. She always described their first date as love at first sight and they married in 1980 at his sister, Judy Smith’s home in Houston. The two resided in Dallas until 1982, when David was transferred to Houston, eventually living in both Kingwood and Spring, Texas until 1986 when they returned to Dallas and bought a home in Grand Prairie. Susy and David shared a love of music, attending many concerts and music festivals. They were big fans and followers of two of their Texas favorites- Willie Nelson and Stevie Ray Vaughn, and caught The Eagles whenever the band was in town. The two also loved baseball and played on several coed softball teams. Both were die-hard Ranger fans before it was cool, and Susy actually joined the Texas Ranger’s Women’s Club to work at the games just before she fell ill. She loved cooking, especially for David, and often entertained the entire family during the holiday season. Anybody who knew Susy knew of her love for dogs. She had her beloved Bubba first, a daschaund, her cocker spaniels Mandy and Molly, and finally Buddy the mutt. She had a special way with animals. Friends Michelle and George Rodriquez remember Susy fondly as the only person their dog ever allowed near. Susy spent most of her work career in customer service, lending to a knowledge of everything from custom cabinets to pool installations. The latter she oversaw in her own backyard, where she and David spent much of their time enjoying the sun and water. They were pretty content with a Coors Lite, music playing in the background, and floating in the pool. When they did venture out from their backyard paradise, they enjoyed traveling to Padre Island and Canada, where David’s family lived. Susy was someone who could fix anything. If anybody in the family had a plumbing, electrical, or mechanical problem, we called her in first. She could breeze through directions and put anything together with ease- “some assembly required” was never a challenge for her! She was an avid reader until her stroke in February, and we discovered later that she was also an impeccable record keeper with every warranty, receipt, tax record for the last two decades filed and cross referenced. Her family would like to thank all the people who supported Susy and us during this last eighteen months. We are grateful to the friends who made sure she got out of the house after her stroke and cancer diagnoses, to those friends who took her to the movies when she could no longer see well enough to read, to all the people who made visits to the hospitals, who sent over meals, who helped Kathy with the salon, to Maria and Jose for spoiling her rotten with their endless caregiving, and a special “thank you” to Suzy Dunn Bradford for keeping everyone updated throughout Susy’s entire illness and her passing. Memorial Services will be held at 7 P. M. Thursday, January 12, 2012 at the WEST/HURTT Funeral Home. Memorials are encouraged to the Faith Presbyterian Hospice, 4850 Sigma Rd., Suite 400 Dallas, TX 75244 972.239.5300
