Wanda Lee Shirley

October 8, 1932 — March 20, 2017

84, of North Richland Hills, TX passed away March 20, 2017. The family will receive friends in the West/Hurtt Funeral Home Chapel on Friday - March 24, 2017 from 1 - 2:00 P.M. with the Funeral Service beginning at 2:00 P.M. (all on the same day) with Dr. Jerry R. Raines, officiating. Interment will follow in Red Oak Cemetery, Red Oak, TX. Wanda was the youngest of 10 children born to Johnny and Roxie Coley.  She graduated from Waxahachie High School and attended SMU Business School.  She lived her whole life in the Dallas, Red Oak, and De Soto area.  As a young wife and mother she attended Grace Temple Baptist Church and was active teaching Sunday School to Young Marrieds.  She had a beautiful voice and sang in the choir as well as solos on the radio.  She played the piano beautifully by ear and entertained many during the holiday time. She had several professional vocational pursuits including an Executive Secretary for General Electric, Computer Data Entry Supervisor for Briggs Weaver Machinery, and Food Service Administrator Assistant for Red Oak School District.  After retirement Wanda enjoyed Solid Rockers Choir as a long time member of Hampton Road Baptist Church. She also loved to travel and she did so across the globe extensively with her sisters and friends.  Wanda was known by “Nana” and she was loved by all.  She had a zeal for life and loved a new adventure.  Her last years were spent peacefully and comfortably presiding in North Richland Hills where she was a member of North Richland Hills Baptist Church and she enjoyed the company and laughter of children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.  As one of her nieces said, “Wanda was a true Coley Woman - strong, faith-based, and quick with wit and wisdom.” Wanda is preceded in death by husband A.N. “Tex” Shirley, Son-in-Law Dave Sanders, and several siblings.  She is survived by sister, Allyne Coley Loftin, daughter Pam Sanders Bradford (and husband Richard), daughter Debbie Shirley Merritt (and husband Pat). Grandchildren Jennifer Sanders de Wolfe (and husband Jason), Clay Merritt, Doug Sanders (and wife Kelli), Tyler Merritt (and wife Jessica).   Great Grandchildren: Addyson, Katelyn, Audrey, Nolan, Cannon, Coleman, and Emerson Joy. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital or Children’s Medical Center of Dallas (where Wanda served as a Candy Stripe Volunteer in the 1960’s).Please provide the charity with the family's name and address so acknowledgements may be sent.
