Ward served in the United States Navy and Naval Reserves obtaining the rank of Petty Officer 2nd Class and receiving the National Defense Service Medal. He married Darlene Long August 26, 1994 in Wolfboro New Hampshire. They were married in the Washington, D.C. Temple of the Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on August 24, 1995 . Together they had fifteen children. His Church callings were, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints DeSoto Ward, DeSoto, Texas. He served as Young Men's President, Elders Quorum President, Ward Clerk, ScoutMaster, Gospel Doctrine Sunday School Class Teacher. He was Co-Founder of Hanington House Strings, Volunteer Firefighter Tuftonboro, New Hampshire, Wolfboro Theatre Company, Wolfboro, New Hampshire, and Washington National Chaplain's Association. He is survived by his wife Darlene Long Hanington, children Katryn Elizabeth Smith, Sarah Joan Smith, Deborah Joy Hanington, Michael Thomas Hanington, Christopher Patrick Hanington, Adrian Alexander Hanington, Dean Ward Hanington, Zachary Christian Hanington, Samuel Thomas Hanington, Christina Petty, Stephanie Harper, Melissa Williams, Jennifer Mills, James Michael Williams, and Angela Whitmore.
